GROUNDWATER QUALITY STUDY IN SONIPAT CITY, HARYANA, INDIA

In the present study, groundwater quality in Sonipat city of Haryana state has been studied. In the study area, 21 groundwater samples were collected from tube wells and hand pumps in the month of March 2018. Groundwater samples analysed for twelve chemical parameters showed that pH ranges 6.5 to 7.5; alkalinity 50 mg/l to 500 mg/l; hardness 50 mg/l to 1200 mg/l; chloride 50 mg/l to 500 mg/l; Total dissolved solids 300 mg/l to 2100 mg/l; fluoride 0 mg/l to 5 mg/l; iron nil at all sample locations; ammonia 0 mg/l to 5 mg/l; nitrite 0 mg/l to 0.5 mg/l; nitrate 0 mg/l to 100 mg/l; phosphate nil at all sample locations and residual chlorine 0 mg/l to 0.2 mg/l. In the study area hardness in three sample locations, total dissolved solids in one location, fluoride in eight sample locations, ammonia in 11 sample locations and nitrate in thirteen sample locations have been observed under non-potable category of drinking water as per BIS 10500:2012 drinking water standards.
