VARIETAL RESPONSES OF BARLEY, HORDEUM VULGARE ( LINN.) ON GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF RICE WEEVIL, SITOPHILUS ORYZAE LINN. (COLEOPTERA: CURCULIONIDAE)

Abstract:

Experiments were conducted to test the fifteen barley varieties for their responses on growth and development of rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae Linn. The maximum pre-oviposition period was recorded (8.67days) on variety K898 followed by K8909 (5.34 days) while, oviposition period ranged from minimum 1.98 and 2.00 days on varieties Manjula and K551, respectively. The maximum number of eggs were laid by adult female and hatchability percent was recorded on variety Jyoti (96.00 egg) followed by Manjula (95.67). The highest adult emergence was recorded in the variety Jyoti (90.34%) and K551(88.0%)whereas, lowest adult  emergence was seen in K890(57.00%). The maximum developmental period was recorded in variety K 898(40 days) and minimum (23 days) on variety Jyoti. The highest susceptibility index was on variety Jyoti (19.07) followed by Manjula (15.86) and K927 (14.38).  The maximum grain damaged in variety Jyoti (52.00%), Manjula (46.67) and K551 (34.67) where, as minimum (4.33%) on variety of K898. The higher weight loss (19.00%) followed by Manjula (18.00) and K551 (16.00) and minimum (1.34%) on variety K 898.
