VALIDATION OF BACTERIAL BLIGHT RESISTANCE GENES IN RICE THROUGH MICROSATELLITE MARKERS

Abstract: 
The present study was undertaken to improve two red kernel rice varieties of Kerala Aiswarya and Prathyasa for BLB resistance. Improved samba mahsuri, Fbr-1-1, PR-114 used as a donors having resistance genes xa13 Xa21, Xa33 and Xa38. Before using the donor and recurrent parents in crossing programme for generation of breeding material, the parents must be validated for the presence of resistance genes using respective gene targeted markers. Microsatellite markers xa13 pro, pTA 248, RMWR 7.1, RMWR7.6 and Oso4g53050 are closely linked to the BLB resistance genes. Among flanking markers for Xa33, RMWR 7.1 showed higher polymorphism between donor and recurrent parents. Hence these microsatellite markers can be used to select plants possessing these resistance genes and markers polymorphic between donor and recurrent parents.
