STUDY ON EFFECT OF WATER POLLUTION ON GROWTH OF INDIAN MAJOR CARPS

Abstract:

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of water pollution on growth of Labeo rohita, Catla catla and Cirrhinus mrigala. Physico-chemical parameters viz. temperature, pH, turbidity, transparency, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand and hardness of Ganga river water also monitored during the study period. To analyze the growth of fishes total length, total weight, length weight relationship, condition factor (K), regression coefficient (b) and statistical analysis of the relationship were measured. It was found that value of b (0.114, 0.019 and 0.024) for Labeo rohita, Catla catla and Cirrhinus mrigala, respectively (allometric growth) show significant (p<0.01) variation from standard value of b (3) (isometric growth) i.e. water pollution affect the growth of fishes.
